Topic 8

Reflection and Personal Philosophy

This is our final assignment for this course and it is concerning Reflection. Reflection is a very important tool used to describe or justify the importance of reasoning in terms of explaining or making a valid point concerning an important manner. While a personal philosophy is a personal principle of believe that you as a person has chosen to follow.
I am planning to use reflection in developing my e-Portfolio content pages by adding my own personal experiences that I have encountered in the work place as a tool and a guide to prove some of the points and issues that patients who receive healthcare today should be aware of and how they can change or ask the right questions, that may or could save the life of someone.

For this assignment I would like for you all to do the following:
 • Share your understanding of reflection. How is it different from description?
 • How have your own personal reflections change your life and others around you?
 • Also what are some of your own personal reflections? And on do you plan on showcasing this information in your e-portfolio?
 • Give a few examples of how this course has helped you and will prepare you for the next phase of life.
 • Also what are a few examples that you can share for the next upcoming cornerstone students.

Please take the time to answer each question and also please post to two postings.

  1. I would explain the term “reflection” as your account or reflection of an experience that you have had. The term “description” is when you are giving a definition or explaining what something is. Personally I have become who I am today because of a lot of self reflection. You are who you are because of your experiences both educational and personal. If I would have not gone through some of these experiences I would not be at the position I am today, I have been able to take the positive out of the bad situations and learn to appreciate the good things that have happened in my life. As far as the e-portfolio I’m still on the fence whether I should put in personal experiences or my personal feeling. On one hand I know the professor has told us to keep away from “personal” feelings but on the other hand how can I truly express my thoughts without throwing in some personal experiences?

I do believe this course has helped me and it will be an experience that will stay with me throughout my life. It has helped by providing me with the knowledge of what it means to be a true interdisciplinarian. Prior to this class I did not understand what I was even majoring in. All I knew was that it would get me to where I wanted to be sooner than later and honestly I was all for it! But now I understand the importance of our degree and how it can better help any situation and my future experiences. I would let future students know just to make sure that they take lots of note of what it actually going on. Though at times all of the work may seem overwhelming and just busy work, it really isn’t. You can definitely use everything we have done in the class for the future if anything it will help you explain what you are going to school for = ).

    1. I feel just like you do about the personal feelings. As a 41 year-old stay-at-home mother of three for 16 years and a wife, I am not who I was 24 years ago when I graduated from high school. I am the person I am today because of the things I have experienced, so it is hard to separate "personal" feelings from what I think, do, write, etc.

    2. Sara - It is definitely hard to separate but honestly I believe that it makes our end product more significant. It gives the reader a chance to connect with you. It gives them the chance to really understand and feel what you were going through during that particular moment. So I would think as long as its not a spewing of emotional madness a little bit of personal emphasis will go a long way!

    3. Zenya,
It sounds like you have learned something called balance. This is very important. Many times I have so much going on in life and I have no clue how and when it all will be done. This course and major has given just that. This course has made me realize it does not matter when I graduate, but when I get out what will I do next. I was up in the air about life and my direction in my educational goals, by being about to have to areas of studies, I am now more certain more than ever what path I will be taking next. Good luck and you will be fine.

    4. Sandy,
Youre absolutely right I have learned balance. It is not until now that you say that, that I am actually realizing. Im finally at a place where I understand & know that what I need is more important that what I want. Its taken a while to get here but Im glad I finally am.
Im glad that you have also been able to get yourself on track on what you need to do to make Sandy happy! I too wish you nothing but good luck and fortune for you and your family!

    5. The work in this class really does help you to understand what college is all about. It helps you to look into the future and assess what it is you realy want. Sometimes it may seem like busy work but it can be helpful. I find that this class prompts me to do a lot of reflection on my own time.

    6. This course has helped everyone. It is really important understanding what your major is and how you can mix it with your minor or know how you can put it in action. Notes are essential for people that way they can use it for further assignments. It is a good feeling when people don’t know or remember something, but have notes to look back at.

  2. Reflection for me is being able to look back at prior experiences and assess how these have shaped my life and what I have gained from them. Whether positive or negative we always have something to learn and grow from. Description is explaining something in terms of characteristics; it is painting a picture to help someone else understand something. I can reflect on an experience and find some personal meaning or significance in it, or I can just describe the experience without giving any insight.

My own personal reflections have completely changed who I am today as opposed to whom I thought I was going to or wanted to be. They have helped me see that the things I have ended up doing truly make me happy. I have found great rewards in helping others, not only personal but also professional. For example, through my volunteer work I was forced to break out of my shell, my shyness always held me back. Looking back I wish I had tried to break this obstacle years ago.

This course has helped me discover and understand interdisciplinarity. I have found myself thinking in terms of all my areas and minor as opposed to from just one angle.

    1. Hi Sara

I’m glad you were able to overcome your obstacle of shyness through volunteer work. I know for me volunteering has given me the opportunity to overcome my own obstacle with shyness. It also taught me to appreciate what I have. Even when things seem they can’t get worse I remember that I am fortunate and grateful for everything I have.

I too have realized that after personal reflection I am a totally different place then where I thought I would be. Some things have turned out better than others. As I’ve gotten older I think back and wish I would have listened to my parents nagging ;) Now I can understand that it wasn’t nagging at all that all they were trying to do is give me advice from their own experiences and reflection of their life. I’m glad you are in a happy place in life and I wish you nothing but the best for the future!!

    2. Sara,
Whoa!!! That's awesome news about you coming out of your shell from doing volunteer work. That's the blessing behind doing those types of services. I have always found in the end I end up walking away learning more then the time I put in. It's a great feeling of knowing while you are doing something good, God opens the door for you to receive a blessing. Keep up the good work. This course will def. give you balance and the opportunity to know and learn more about your self as a person.

Good luck this semester!!! And may God bless you all in this course!!!

    3. I like your metaphor that reflections is painting a picture of understanding. It is important to have periods of reflection. We become who we are through reflection. Often times we make decisions in the moment and do not realize the outcome they will have. Reflection helps us to look back and question what we've done.

  3. Zenya,
I think we've all been there with the parents nagging, lol. I have come to realize that, no matter how well intended the nagging is, we truly learn better from our own experiences. So now, while I give my children gentle advice I let them have their own experiences, but I'm here for them if they fall.

    Sandy,
Thank you for your kind words and good luck to you too!

  4. Reflection is all about sitting back and taking a deeper look at the decisions you've made. When I think of the word "reflection", I think of an old man or woman looking back on their lifes and pondering whether or not they made the right moves. It's just hindsight, really. Personally, I've made decisions in my life I wasn't proud of, then after periods of reflection, I've gone back and made some changes based on those decisions.

  5. Personally, I heve recently done a great deal of reflection on my college career. I think about what i am good at and what I see myself doing. I started off as an english major, then switched to advertising. After that I became and interdisciplinary studies major. Upon further reflection, I believe I would go back and major in education if I could. Reflection is tough because it involves coming to terms with the decisions you've made.

  6. This course has helped me realize some things about myself. It has realy helped me to realize that it is a good idea to saave previous work for future employers. I also have learned how to analyze and write about myself. This course has helped me with resume writing. If I could give some tips to future cornerstone students, it woud be to have all of your previous work saved in a certain file and also to have a resume ready before going into this class.

  7. • Share your understanding of reflection. How is it different from description?

Reflection is very similar to a description but digs a little deeper…When one reflects upon their life, a specific experience, a moment, etc… One describes what happened, but then they move forward to share what they’ve learned from it. They dig beyond the obvious surface that someone else who was there could also say and express how it made them personally feel, how it affects who they are in the present, or how it might affect how they will be in the future…

    • How have your own personal reflections changed your life and others around you?

When ever I’ve reflected upon decisions I’ve made in my life, it helps me to make ones I have in front of me now. I’ve experienced many things in life, just as everyone has, but I try to learn from my mistakes so as not to repeat them continuously, unlike some…Some of my reflections have affected who I choose to surround myself with and what we do. I’ve left some people behind because the past has taught me that those type of personalities are something I do not enjoy being around, or that doing certain activities get me into trouble. Just as my decisions affect me, they sometimes affect others, in the manner of how I try to look out for what is feel is in the best interest of those I love and through my reflections of my own experiences, I hand out advice to them when they are dealing with situations of their own.

  8. • Also what are some of your own personal reflections? And on do you plan on showcasing this information in your e-portfolio?

I believe my reflections are called personal because they pertain to and are for me. So the only ones I like to share are very simple and common. I do plan to share those in my e-portfolio, but only the ones pertaining to my main topic of school and education. I plan to share on my reflections of my personal education in high school, such as:
    1. How I could have done better
    2. How I wanted to get out sooo bad but once I graduated, I wanted to go back more then I can express.(I missed certain classes, friends, and the easy of a set schedule)
    3. How I thought the world revolved around my friends and our stupid drama rather then giving school more of the attention it deserved…

I have so many things I think about when I look back at my past...I do not dwell and regret anything I’ve done, because even though I make those wishes, I remember that if I changed any of it I may not have all the wonderful things I have today. If I had done a little better in high school and gotten into the college I wanted, I may not have my fiancé and dogs, I have now (they are my family). But I learned that I can’t just dream of attaining things, I have to work hard for them like the kids who did get into my dream school…

Just so everyone knows…I didn’t do badly in high school, just lower then my NOW standards. And I did get into a good school, just not my dream school.

    1. You know how they always say, "hind sight is 20/20?" It seems we can almost always see clearer when we're looking back now! I was a lot like you in high school: I didn't have the standards I have now and in comparison, looks pretty bad even though I still did pretty good. But being able to see all that now and in turn realize how much better you're doing overall now is huge! That's definitely something you can highlight in your ePortfolio and will look very good. It shows you have developed not only as a student but also as a person. Great job!

  9. • Give a few examples of how this course has helped you and will prepare you for the next phase of life.

This course has helped me to better understand what my major actually is and has helped me to be able to look at the connection between many things I do, that I once before thought were completely unrelated. I’m not 100% sure what is has or will prepare me for in the next phase of my life other then in a few semesters the help and grounds it has provided me for capstone…

    • Also what are a few examples that you can share for the next upcoming cornerstone students.
A few examples of what???? Of what the class has helped me with, or prepared me for?
I would have to say (thinking outside of the box) this class has helped me with the usage of an online course. I’ve never taken one before this and now I have a better understanding of how they work, let alone my new opinion on whether or not I like them…(I don’t really care for them, and still prefer F2F courses)…

    1. Joy,

Well I think you figured out that your not to found of webcourses and prefer F2F. The only thing I can say is that it is necessary now and days to be able to do things on your own and understand things by your self. Webcourses allows you to do that in the sense that you have to answer all the assignments and follow directions on your own. If I were you I would take more online courses, so you can get more familiar with it and as well as your self.

      Best of luck,
      Sam

    2. I would not judge online courses based on just one, let alone on this one. I have taken many online courses and have enjoyed most of them. They are all designed differently and some subjects can be more challenging to be done online than others. I do enjoy the challenge of figuring out things on my own.

    3. I’m really glad taking this course has brought you a better understanding of your major. I know has for me too. Your right, this class has definitely prepared us for Capstone. Everyone has their different opinion about inline classes. For some people it’s convenient and others just like them. I think depending on the circumstances online classes are more suitable.

  10. Share your understanding of reflection. How is it different from description?

When you’re describing something/someone I believe you are explaining in accurate details what it’s about and how it connects with your life. Describing isn’t personal; you are specifically identifying a subject. A reflection is when you give out your personal output of something and what you think it is. Reflection comes from your personal understanding and your personal experience. Basically a summary of something you have experienced.

How have your own personal reflections change your life and others around you?

My personal reflection is based on my educational career. It has been a positive journey through the years with lots of changes. I have learned from my personal reflections to do what is best for me. My personal reflections have opened my eyes to what decision will be most beneficial for me like studying in interdisciplinary studies. Others around me prefer me going with my instinct instead of doing something I don’t like.

Also what are some of your own personal reflections? And on do you plan on showcasing this information in your e-portfolio?

I plan on explaining what I have accomplished because of my personal reflections in my e-portfolio. I want others to know it is ok to make changes, even if people think it may be too late. My personal reflections have consisted of my story of how I began school wanting to be a nurse, to a nun and now an elementary school teacher and how I’ve come this far.

Give a few examples of how this course has helped you and will prepare you for the next phase of life.

I am very pleased I was introduced to interdisciplinary studies. This course has given me in my opinion an advantage to overlook all obstacles in my life. Not that I didn’t know about the career I plan to start soon, but taking this course has also given me a broader definition of what I’ll be doing soon. I found a way how to connect my majors with my minor and how they work together. In my next phase of life I will be thinking of the bigger picture of interdisciplinarity.

Also what are a few examples that you can share for the next upcoming cornerstone students.

I want upcoming students to take responsibility in this course by being open minded and asking questions. Some of the things I completed for this course have been a challenge for me, but I can’t let that stop me from doing what I have to do.

    1. I admire your commitment and persistence! I remember when I was in Cornerstone, a lot of what we had to do was also challenging for me. You have a great attitude though, and a lot of the time that is the difference between succeeding and not doing so well!

I'm glad you found a way connect the dots with your major and what you'd like to do with it! I also remember this course helping me out with that, as I wasn't even sure how to describe it yet alone apply it! I'm happy you've done so well and got a lot out of all your hard work :)
