Welcome!

So, here we are! Before we begin anything, allow us to introduce ourselves!

Hey guys! My name is Heather Austin and I’m an Interdisciplinary Studies major at UCF. I’m finally in my graduating semester and it sure does feel good (there IS a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise you!)! I chose the IS degree because I was initially a Business major, but I didn’t like what I was doing and didn't want to lose my credits if I switched to another major. Because of all this, IS was the PERFECT choice for me to switch to. My areas of concentration are Commerce and Letters and Modern Languages, and my minor is Education. I’ll also be graduating with the new undergraduate TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate, as I’m an aspiring ESL/EFL teacher and wish to teach English overseas. But enough of that school stuff! In my off time, I really enjoy just hanging out and having a good time. Random facts about me: I love being around people, especially my family and friends, I really enjoy bowling and pool, music is my lifeline, and I have a slight obsession with wine (I work at a wine shop). I’m really looking forward to working with you all, and I’m sure we’ll learn a lot from each other! If you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. (Hint for the future: Keep everything you’ve done in your Cornerstone class because you’ll be able to recycle a lot of it when you get to Capstone ;-) )

My name is Melissa Olivarez and I am a full time student at U.C.F. My areas of concentration are in Business and Behavioral/Social Sciences. My minors are Organizational Communications and Entrepreneurship. I am graduating this semester and am super excited. I also work part time and I am a full-time mom of four children.
I am really outgoing and I love to help people. In my spare time I like to read the bible, pray, watch a movie, and I always love spending quality time with my kids; either going out or staying home for a good game of monopoly.
My decision for pursuing a degree in I.S. was primarily centered around the fact that I love so many different things. I have always been intrigued by communications because I am a real people person. Yet, I have also always wanted to own a business. So, I figured I would learn about people (which you have to deal with people in business) and I would become skilled in the area of business.
I look forward to working with you all this semester and I hope it will end up being a learning experience for all of us.

My name is Sandy Cilliac. I selected this major because of the opportunities and the doors I believe could open for me. My areas of studies are Business and Communications, with a minor in Health Administration. Though the term Interdisciplinary is not a buzz word in many people’s vocabulary, once you tell them that it usually is a gate way to starting a very interesting conversation. After graduation I intend on continuing my education in hopes of obtaining a masters in Healthcare Administration. I believe that my two areas of studies are relevant to my career and that both areas of studies will complement my master’s degree, which in the long runs will make me a stronger candidate in terms of my future employer’s eyes. For fun I enjoy traveling, spending time with family, shopping and giving back to my community by volunteering for some local groups. I am really looking forward to working with you guys!

Hello, My name is Sammy Barakat, and for fun I like to play basketball. I am an IDS major with a minor in interpersonal organizational communications. As IDS major I have two areas of study which are commerce and humanities. I love that I had the opportunity to have more than one major as being an IDS student. It has been a very interesting journey for me as an IDS student and I am glad that I choose IDS as my major!

Hello everyone! My name is Erik Hempe and I am a senior at UCF. I am looking forward to graduating in May as well as the upcoming baseball season. This is my second year at UCF. I am originally from Orange County, California, which is where I attended Cypress Community College. I transferred to UCF for a baseball scholarship and I have really enjoyed my time here. I chose an IDS major with the encouragement from my coaches and I look forward to helping other students in the major.

Hello! My name is Lauren Stroup and I have been married for nine years and have a seven year old son and a six year old daughter who keep me very busy. Between home and school life, I don’t know whether I am coming or going, as I’m sure many of you feel right now. Though at this juncture in my life, I do not get out very often; when I do, I like to check out local events, try to new restaurants, and explore my own backyard, so to speak. But my favorite thing to do is to spend time with family. I decided very late in my coursework to pursue Interdisciplinary Studies, and to be honest, I had no idea how it would shape my career plans when I started, if at all. I started out as a Business Major, then switched to Elementary Education, but later discovered that I wanted to teach upper-level and that I had a particular interest in literature; hence my content areas in Education and Commerce and my minor in Literature. I know, I know, where does the Commerce fit in? I thought the same thing. Well, I have decided to pull-out a sub-topic of Commerce (technology), which complements my other two very nicely, as it turns out, because of its' ability to boost student motivation and strengthen literacy skills. Although I initially thought my decision to select a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies was little more than a course correction to get me on the path to my desired career, I have been amazed at how wrong I was and thrilled to discover how much this field has to offer. I know that this field may seem confusing right now, but hold tight, everything will become clear, and you will soon better understand how your unique areas of interest can be infused to form something new and exciting! Good Luck to you and have a great semester!

Hi everyone! My name is Victoria, but I’m known to my friends as Tori. I love to be outside, whether it’s the beach, working out, picnics in the park, playing sports and learning new things (the most recent was riding dirt bikes!!). I love the IDS major because it fits my style but I am still unsure of how to appropriately market my degree and what I am actually going to do with it. I explain IDS to my friends and family by telling them it’s a major with freedom. It lets me choose what I want to study based on my interests. It’s cool because I’m molding a degree to fit me and not molding me to fit a degree! The advantages of being an IDS major, besides the freedom, is how broad or narrow you can make your degree. You can choose disciplines that complement each other, such as commerce and communications, or those that contrast, such as communications and biology. A disadvantage to being an IDS major is that it is all up to you. What I mean by that is you are not going to get a “Biology” or “Nursing” degree, something common that everyone understand. You get a degree that you need to learn to market and explain to others. Before becoming an IDS major I changed my major a total of 6 times!! I clearly was undecided in what I really wanted to do and had many different interests. When I finally learned about IDS I could use all those previous things I was interested in to create a degree that worked for me!

Now it's your turn -- time to get started!
-Who are you?
-What do you like to do for fun?
-What made you become an IS major?
-Is there anything you don't understand about your major?
-What are the advantages/disadvantages of an interdisciplinary education?
-How do you explain interdisciplinary studies to others?

Once you've answered the above questions, take a look at the two pictures below. There you'll see a delicious smoothie and a fresh fruit salad. Analyze both pictures and explain which one you think is more useful in explaining interdisciplinarity. Keep in mind, there are no true right or wrong answers for this -- we just want your humble opinions ;-)

    1. Oh I wish I would have read your comment earlier because it took me a while getting it back! I posted it here first but then thought it was the wrong place to post it so I deleted and now know it's the right place.
      Thanks though :)

  4. Hi, my name is Joy Perez, and in two years, Joy Davis (I’m just really excited about it).
On my free time out side of class and work I enjoy hanging out with my friends and fiancé, listening to music, drawing, playing with my dogs, dancing, organizing my stuff (its weird but its satisfying), and so much more. I’m a pretty easy going person who is willing to try almost anything at least once. I can be your hyper, crazy, fun out going friend but at the same time which is what I seem to be the most now with my age and friends (I’m only 26 but its far different from when I was 18), more calm and relaxed and laid back. We like to sit a round with our coffee and just chat for hours.
I became an IS major because I have been in school since 2004 and just wanted to be done already. This major allowed me to use my credits in a manner that still lets me pursue my passion of music and teaching, but in a school with less demands such as the school of music or education and allow me to graduate sooner then I thought. It also allowed me to be able to pursue teaching in another field so that I may have an easier time finding a position until a music position is available since there are so few. I think I understand my major but then again, I never put full thought into it? I really just treated it as a means to get to where I want to be in the future. I feel that the advantages on IS is the opportunities it gives you to explore so many different options and at the same time be able to combined them into one personally tailored major. Maybe the only disadvantage isn’t really much to do directly with the major its self but rather the fact that it is not well talked about in the front offices at school. I never heard of this major until I went to an advisor, crying, because I was lost in my original major and it looked like I had soooo much more school ahead of me; and yes, I had been to many advisors before, but this was the first one to ever turn me onto IS and say “Based off your many credits, this seems like a perfect program for you”. When I went to look at the degree and entered into the program, many people asked me what IS was because they had never heard of it before either. At the time and still pretty much now, I describe it to them as the idea of two majors and a minor. I get the chance to focus on three seemingly different topics I like but in the end combined them into one career. Its almost like the idea of double majoring without all the extra work.
Just as the one of the pictures depicted; my example of IS would relate to the smoothie. IS is a bunch of different fruits blended together to make one delicious drink. It doesn’t take to much extra work by cutting the fruits up because they do not need to be cut neatly for presentation since they will be blended and then the simple task of pressing the “go” button to blend. I just needed to hit “go” or “start” in my educational life to figure it all out and IS seems to have done that, and it taste pretty great!

...I do hope I put this is the correct area...

    1. I admire that you never gave up your schooling and found the IS program. It seems to me that it is a brilliant idea because it allows people who have switched majors to combine what they have learned without throwing out credits. Not to mention, it is important to have multiple areas of education to draw from. I was also overwhelmed when I went to my advisor after switching out of AD/PR program. I didn't want to start all over and IS helped me realize the importance of multiple fields of education.

    2. Joy,
The best things in life are the ones that you work hard for. Remember, we only fail ourselves when we don't try. I am sure com graduation time all the sweat and tears will be work it all. I worked 2 to 3 jobs to get to this day. Even when I felt like giving up God gave me the strength to keep going. I have faith in you. Good luck!

Fear not, you responded correctly! And thank you for being so open and honest with your response!

Congrats on your engagement ;-) Is that a recent thing? Why are you waiting two years to tie the knot? Are you planning a big one? You and your friends sound like me and my friends -- just relaxing and enjoying the company. Sometimes there really is just nothing better than that.

I love your reasoning behind why you chose the smoothie. I never really thought about the time it would take to prepare the fruit salad as far as equal slices and presentation goes. I literally sat back in my chair and said, "Ohhh, yeahhhh," out loud! Like you, I changed my major to IS because I didn't want to lose some of my credits, and also like you, I think it will work out better for me in the long run. Thanks to the various classes I was able to take, particularly in Letters and Modern Languages and Education, I have an impressive set of credentials that has landed me an interview with the Japanese Consulate in Miami in about two weeks for a teaching position in Japan (wish me luck!). Hopefully, your areas and minor will set you up in a similar way that prepares you in exactly the way you need to be prepared for a music teaching position when the time comes!

    1. First let me say Thank You! We just got engaged on Christmas so yes its new, and we are waiting two years because I have a year left in school and we can also save up for the wedding as well. Its not going to be a huge wedding but its not going to be really small, probably about 70 people, but not matter the size weddings are expensive, ugh!
But moving on…Congrats and good luck on your position in Miami, that sounds like fun and I’m glad this program worked for you. I’m looking forward to working with all of you and can’t wait to see what else we all learn from each other.

  6. Hello everyone! My name is Zenya Moreira … its nice to read about you all =)

So here goes a little info on me… I’m a single mother to a 4 year old diva named Kayla I also work full time and this is my second semester back in school. So you can say I’m a busy lady nowadays with very little ME time, which is a tad depressing at times but I know worth it. Just as Heather said “there IS light at the end of the tunnel” and trust me I SEE IT! I recently purchased a home which was very exciting for us so I’m currently in the process of making it actually feel like a “home”. We are big believers of the saying … “one mans trash is another mans treasure”. So we do like waking up early to go garage shopping or hitting up the local thrift stores and seeing what treasures we can find. I love DIY projects granted they don’t always work out the way I hoped but its fun to at least attempt it. (If you ever have time you should check this website out it’s my favorite DIY blog www.younghouselove.com.)

I’ve been attending school off and on since 2001 and after a four year hiatus I finally decided its time to get things done. I was originally a Business major but knew that’s not what I wanted to do but was too afraid of the thought of starting all over again. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and decided that was the best decision for me. So I set up an appointment with my advisor. After speaking with her and telling her how I wanted to switch my major and what it would take to get done. She told me about the IS program and told me that I would be able to get done in the shortest amount of time using the credits Ive already taken… “FANTASTIC” I thought. This was the first I heard about the program and the advisor did not know much details about it. So I set up and appointment and signed up. Prior to taking this class I didn’t even know what this program was really about. All I knew was that it was a way for me to finish sooner then later and I was all about it. When people would ask what I was going to school for I would give them the short answer “I’m going to be a teacher” because that is my ultimate goal. If they wanted more details I would just say I’m majoring in two areas of the college with a minor in education to prep me for the state exam. With help from this course this program is starting to make sense. Now I can actual understand what the program is about… for the most part at least. =)

After reviewing both photos I would say when explaining the IS program I would relate it more to the smoothie. I like to think of it this way … With this program you are able to take all the things you’ve learned within your disciplines, blend these different points of view thus creating a new view all together… in this case a new shake!!

I will start by saying, "Congrats on the new house"! That is awesome. Owning a home has been a dream of mine for many years but up until now has yet to come true. I still maintain hope. :-) I also love going to garage sales and my hubby has made fun of me many times for it. LOL!

I can sympathize with you on your education being drawn out. I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to go to school, work, and raise a family. Fortunately, I have been able to take a break from work this semester. It's interesting how your experience in becoming an IS major is similiar to many other students I have spoken with. For many, IS is a way out of their predicament but ends up being an opportunity of a lifetime. Oh, and I too have had a hard time explaining my degree. That is one downfall about this major, people don't understand it.

I like your interpretation of IS being like a smoothie. I too see IS as a smoothie. Good luck in finishing up school and enjoy the new home. TTYL.

    2. Thank you Melissa. I still cant believe it till this day I drive into my garage and say ... "Wow this is mine" lol Its a lot of work however more than I had ever anticipated. But the hard work is definitely worth it when its yours.

Oh and tell your hubby he doesn't know what he is missing out on ... I have found great things shopping at garage sales. All they needed were a new coat of paint =)

    3. Zenya,
I would like to say Congrats on your accomplishments. It a wonderful feeling to be a homeowner. I hope one day after school to be able to have my own home. Nevertheless, I thought it was funny that you choose our major as being composed as a smoothie. All I can say is that only translate to us being able to bring more to the table. So, with that said. Best of luck in the future. Sounds like it is going to be brighter than the sun.

It's nice to meet you, it seems like we have a lot in common when it comes to our education. I also started off as a business major but knew deep down I had a burning desire to do something else. I found my love in working with kids and my ultimate goal is to become a teacher. I love that you picked the smoothie and you're explanation, IS is definitely a creation of your own! Can't wait to hear from you on other topics.

I noticed that we are both on the same on and off school plan - I started at UCF back in 2001 as well and recently returned after a 4 year hiatus! It has definitely been a challenge getting back into the swing of things, and balancing school with all the other things in my life now. Best of luck with all of your new home projects!

As for the smoothie, I’m so glad to understood my take on it, it is the most direct way I’m able to look at IDS, and I’m glad it made equal sense to everyone out there rather then just in my silly head.

  10. Hello! My name is Sara Lopez. I am a mom of three and a new grandma to a beautiful little girl. I am also an Army wife. We have been in the military for almost 16 years and have lived in Germany, Georgia, California, Oklahoma, and Texas, are currently stationed in Kentucky, and will be moving to Hawaii by the end of the year. I enjoy spending time with my family, volunteering for our units’ family support groups, going to museums of any kind, exploring the new places we move to, and sewing or doing other crafts when I can find the time.

After putting my education on hold for many years to raise my family I decided it was time to start it back up. This is my first semester at UCF after finishing my A.A. at Brevard Community College. When looking for a Bachelor’s program my biggest hurdle was finding something I could do online. Between all my obligations, homeschooling my youngest, and the military moves, I needed something that could ‘move’ with me. I was very excited when I found out about IDS and being able to do it online, especially since my husband and a few other family members are alumni of UCF. The idea of not having to concentrate in just one area really appealed to me, and being able to select things I am thoroughly interested in sounded like a great deal, which to me are the biggest advantages. My areas are anthropology and Health Services Administration and my minor is Women’s Studies. The disadvantage for me would be understanding how to make these work together, but I guess that’s what this class is for. The first few times I tried to explain to people what interdisciplinary studies is I ended up giving a winded speech. Now I simply say that I get to major in two areas with one minor.

After much thought I would say the fruit salad works better for me. I can see each juicy, appetizing ingredient, I can pick with my fork a few different pieces that I want or ‘need,’ and when I put them in my mouth they blend well together. But then I might be being a bit biased because I do not like smoothies, but I’m a sucker for a mouth-watering bowl of fruit ;)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like your concept of picking at what you want with a fork. To me, that translates to using the right discipline when it is necessary. One does not always need all disciplines they have studied to address an issue or solve a problem. I also say to people that I just combined two majors with a minor. That always seems to clear things up for people!

    2. I dated a Marine for two years, went through a deployment with him, all that jazz...so making it through 16 years and going is awesome! Good for you! My best friend is moving to Hawaii at the end of this month, as her husband is in the Army as well. It would be nutz if you guys somehow end up meeting..small world!

I'm sure you'll figure something out when it comes to using your areas and minor together. This class will definitely help. Not to mention, even if you can't pinpoint something, having a bachelor's degree in general will still be a huge advantage!

    3. I know what you mean when you mentioned it wasn't easy to explain what Interdiscipliary Studies is. I had the same issue. I also had left school before, but now I'm back and it feels good. Your explanation of the fruit salad was very understanding. For me, it means that you can take any discipline and mix it with other disciplines to come up with just solid one and go from there.

  12. Hello everyone my name is Carmen Torres and I am a senior. I love spending time with my family as much as possible. I also love going to the beach and relax. I had some diffculty passing the General Knowledge test so my advisor told me about another way to pursue my goals. That's how I came across Interdiscplinary Studies. I'm an interdisciplinary studies student majoring in Behavioral Sciences and I have a minor in Early Childhood Education. I am glad that interdisciplinary studies has so many directions, but there are some classes that I'm confused about. The advatages of an interdisciplinary education is that it gives you another alternative to finish your education and get your degree. If I didn't find out about this I would have started on another career and that would have taken me a long time to complete. The disadvantages are that I had to take an additional 12 classes when all I had left to do was take 3 classes and my intern. Interdisciplinary Studies have a variety of careers to choose from. It gives someone the oppurtunity to do what they want to accomplish.

I believe the fresh fruit salad represents interdisciplinary studies. To me, interdisciplinary studies is something that is combined of many things. The smothie also makes sense since taking all of these classes will lead up to one career, but the salad includes differents kinds of fruits. Interdisciplinary invloves many different direction to go to and for that reason I choose the fruit salad.

  13. Hi everyone!
My name is Grant Cohen. For fun , I like to travel when I can, play guitar and go to the movies. I became an IS major because I was originally and English major, but didn't enjoy certain aspects of it. Then, I switched to and Ad/Pr major but didn't get into the final program. So, instead of throwing out all those credits, I decided to combine them all and become an IS major. I understand the major and I think the benefits of this major are just being able to draw from multiple different areas to solve problems in life. I believe most of life's problems are not solved by one particular discipline and it is important to be well-rounded. I usually just explain my major by telling people that I have combined two majors and a minor and I like that because I feel it gives me a more complete education.

I would have to say that the first picture represents interdisciplinary a bit more. The fruit salad shows that you can combine many different disciplines at once to address and issue, but the first picture shows me that different disciplines don't always need to be combined to solve a problem. Sometimes it is important to choose from an arsenal of different disciplines for different scenarios instead of combining them all at once.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Grant,
I like your description of "an arsenal of different disciplines." I definitely agree that using ideas and concepts from different disciplines is a great tool to have when addressing problems. Good luck this semester!

    2. You know explaining Interdisciplinary Studies like how you do is easier then saying all these other things making people even more confused than what they already are. I'm just glad Interdisciplinary Stuides exist because if not my credits (designed for a different career choice) would have gone to waste.

  14. I just wanted to comment that I find everyone's areas and minors interesting; the different 'fruit' that some have picked, how some have some of the same pieces, all the different combinations. I think this is why I see it more as a fruit salad; some may have banana, strawberry and kiwi, while the next person may have pineapples, strawberry and apple.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You bring up a very good point as far as picking which fruits you want to blend. Another factor might be being able to take one of the fruits out, whereas with a smoothie you can't do that. It's all definitely very interesting to think about! Thanks for your input ;-)

      Delete
    2. It has been really interesting to read all of the comments and it seems like we share some commonalities, in the respect that we all have interests in more than one area and felt constricted in someway with pursuing a degree in one particular area. In the past, I always felt insecure about not having a clear-cut area of interest, but now I realize that having multiple interests is a good thing that can strengthen my career opportunities and level of fulfillment in it. As many of you pointed out, Interdisciplinary Studies may have started out as a fall-back plan that resulted because of changing degrees, but has become a path for achieving even greater success personally and professionally than any other options we may have pursued initially.

For anyone that feels unsure about what Interdisciplinary Studies is all about or is struggling with how their areas of concentration and minor mesh together, a lot of the unknowns will start to fall into place as the semester unfolds. So don't fret! :-)

  15. Hi, my name is Pauli. In my free I enjoy spending time with friends and family, taking my puppy out on adventures, and reading. I love going on small trips on the weekends. My boyfriend and I especially enjoy going to St. Augustine as a small get away whenever we can.
I was an English literature major previously. After taking a hiatus from school, I returned and switched to an IDS major to take advantage of the tuition reimbursement program my company offers. Classes have to relate to my current job to qualify, so I found out about the IDS program. It allowed me to still use my existing credits in English and Humanities, and add a minor in Organizational Communication which qualifies for the reimbursement program. I am still learning what it means to be an IDS major. This class has certainly clarified a few things for me already though.
I think the benefits of the IDS program include the ability to combine multiple interests into one degree. I think one disadvantage is that it can be difficult at first to see the connections between majors and minors.
I have to admit that when I first switched to an IDS major, I explained at as focusing on two major areas of study and one minor. I did not have any idea that these areas of study were supposed to be interconnected. I now know that IDS is more than just taking classes in 3 separate areas of study. It is more about combining our different areas of knowledge to come up with a unique approach to an issue or problem.
When looking at the two pictures, I have to say that I think the smoothie better exemplifies interdisciplinarity. The fruits have been combined in such a way that they have become something new altogether. This is much like how an IDS approach to an issue is often a new and different way of looking at it. However, the fruit salad could also be considered interdisciplinary because the combination of different fruits may produce totally unique flavors. The flavor depends on the amount of each ingredient and can be approached in a variety of ways. This versatility is also similar to IDS.

    1. Sorry ^ the comment I posted before was to someone else. I'm still getting the hang of this. :)

Pauli, I'm really glad you were able to put all of your exsisting credits into IDS. I would have been destroyed if I had put so much effort into something and in the end it wouldn't have counted. Taking this class has also given me a better insight on what Interdisciplinary Studies really is. I originally picked the friut salad, but I can see how you came up with your explanation. I didn't think about that way before, how by mixing all these ingredients your able to get one solid drink (discipline/ problem). Good resonse! It makes sense to me.
